I had a problem when a plume of red fire came from the open vacuum
system and my regulator 10 K pot used to set the power level fried. The
content of the reaction vessel was air..

It was very sudden after the exciter had been running for some time so I
am unsure what happened.

I wired the connection incorrectly because I was tired. I was trying to
set the level that turned on the triac shunt.
